This book was a bestseller in the early 20th century. It followed the adventures of a young man named... Well, you never do know his name. He was a subordinate to Captain Clark (of the Lewis & Clark expedition), observed the Louisiana Purchase, met Dolley Madison, Napoleon Bonaparte (nearly stumbled upon the First Consul while that gentleman was in his bath). He conversed with the Duc d'Enghien before the man was murdered, and came head to head with a villainous chevalier. All this while loving and trying to woo a lovely young lady of France (living in St. Louis) named Pelagie. Who she was, and how she was tied in with the rest of these characters makes a very enjoyable adventurous love story.My great-grandmother owned this book, and it ultimately came to my father. I read it as a youngster (say, about 12 years old) several times.
I was talking about the book with some friends and family members, and someone said, "You know, that was a good book. I wonder if you could get another copy..."
Well, I could, and I am happy to have it.
My only complaint with this particular purchase is that some villain tore out the illustration that showed the handsome hero and the lovely Pelagie bidding farewell in the company of the Duc d'Enghien, with their horses (one of which, a chestnut mare named Fatima, is a major player) in the background.

I bought a copy of this book at a book auction in the McCracken Co. Kentucky Library, for a $101.00 bid, but I was really interested in it, and it would also help the library. I have really enjoyed reading this book, it is one of my prised collection. It gave me some insite into the early days of my birthplace. This newspaper ad was from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 15 July 1904, Pg. 5. I could have bought this book new in 1904 for $1.50. It is an Episodic love, historic-adventure Novel, first published in 1904 at the time of the St. Louis World Fair & Exposition, to honor the Lewis & Clark's Corp of Discovery. This 1904 Ad describes the book "A strong novel of the Louisiana Purchase, by a new writer, Mary Dillon. It is a sweet and stirring love-story, told in a big fine way; and whether the stalwart blond hero is fighting Indians, braving Napoleon, or seeking to win the willful woman of his heart, you are thrilled and charmed as perhaps you have not been since those delightful days when you first read "Ivanhoe," "Deerslayer," and later on "Hugh Wynn." Intrigue and adventure sustain the interest throughout, and such historic figures as Napoleon and Jefferson are presented with absolute truth as to history and to character. The scenes are laid in St. Louis, Washington and Paris, and the author's pen pictures of urban life one hundred [present 200+] years ago are delightfully vivid and real".
I love historical fiction! This period of time is really interesting to me.
Excellent especially seeing the story mirrored in the 250 celebration St. Louis is enjoying. Considering the fact this was written more than a century ago I've found the author's research very good.
